Mamma Mia! is, at best, a guilty pleasure, largely due to it’s absurdity, ridiculousness, and rather lack of an actual plot. If you happen to love ABBA this is for you though, but if you don’t, I’d suggest a quick exit is necessary. Pronto. One of the more negative elements of the film include:
Donna laments, “I brought this all on myself because I was a stupid, reckless little slut.” But her friends pooh-pooh that as the unreasonable morality of her mother talking. It’s mentioned that Sophie is like her and Donna replies, “If she were more like me, she wouldn’t be getting married at 20. Rosie adds, “Or marrying at all.”
The film features Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Doubt, Death Becomes Her, The Hours, The Iron Lady), Christine Baranski (Chicago, Cruel Intentions), and Stellan Skarsgård (Bootstrap Bill in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End; and Dr. Erik Selvig in Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron).
At least there is an attractive Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger).
